Performance Appraisal

The goal of a performance appraisal should be to increase communication, establish clear expectations, reinforce good performance while improving unsatisfactory performance, and foster a spirit of cooperation and teamwork. From a supervisor's point of view, it is also an opportunity to document specific criteria for salary increases, promotions or disciplinary actions. It also involves setting goals with a plan of action for the next period.

In some companies, the appraisal includes assessments from the employee's supervisor, peers, subordinates and customers as well as a self assessment.

Performance appraisals may be conducted as often as every three to six months, but annual appraisals are more common.

 

Performance appraisal is another term for performance review. It is a formal process in which a supervisor and employee meet to discuss an evaluation of an employee's job performance based upon previously agreed upon established goals and standards.
