What I like to do outside of work:
People do things outside of work? I like to hang out with my niece and nephew, ski, play soccer, hike, ride my road bike, listen to music, travel, sleep in a tent in the mountains near a lake far away from city lights.

Q: Where in your background did you learn the most?
A: I learned a great deal watching the genesis of the CRM market during my tenure at Clarify. I learned a ton at Extensity being part of a $90m IPO during the boom, keeping the company alive during the crash, being acquired by Geac, and subsequently acquiring another company with Geac. I've learned a great deal from numerous mentors along the way starting in the early days at Oracle. But I've definitely learned the most in the last 18 months at SuccessFactors. Oh, and my brother taught me the word freezing at age 2, which has proven useful on numerous occasions.

Q: If you could meet one person in history, who would you meet and why?
A: John Lennon. We could have in depth conversations on world peace, he could tell me stories of fortune and fame, and then we could sit around and play guitar and sing Beatles tunes.

Q: What's been your biggest surprise during your time at SuccessFactors?
A: Just one? How about 3...

  1. That there are as many companies as there are who truly get that employees drive performance and that having performance and talent management processes in place truly impacts overall company performance.
  2. That when Lars has an idea that seems crazy I should suspend judgment and do it because he's pretty much always right.
  3. That my co-workers would become my very best friends.

Q: If you had 20 seconds to tell a new client about why they should use SuccessFactors, what would you say?
A: I would tell them that companies on SuccessFactors have two things - they have streamlined processes that were formerly manual and cumbersome, which makes everyone's lives easier (HR, managers, & employees). And they have happier, more engaged employees who are doing a better job on the tasks that really matter. All in a low cost, on-demand model.

Then I would give them our customer list and tell them to pick 20 and give them a call.

Q: Why do you believe in the promise of Performance & Talent Management?
A: Playing team sports through college taught me the value of aligned goals, individual and team performance, developing skills and bench strength. When I entered the business world it was a stark contrast and I found myself constantly striving to find that same performance-based culture in a corporation. I have certainly found it at SuccessFactors, and I love being part of helping other organizations achieve the same.
